What Is Malware?
“Short for ‘malicious software’, malware is software designed to harm or hijack your computer.”
Have you ever clicked on a website and had an annoying pop up asking you just can’t seem to get out of? One where clicking ‘no’ just launches more pop ups? There is a good chance you are seeing ‘malware’ in action. Short for ‘malicious software’, malware is software designed to harm or hijack your computer. It is a catch all term that covers spyware, viruses, ransomware, adware and a couple of other types of malicious software.
How do you know if your machine is infected? As mentioned above, software you can’t close, or where clicking no launches additional tabs or software. Other symptoms can include increased data usage, your machine or phone running hot, contacts calling or texting saying they received messages or emails or even calls from your phone.
What can you do about it? First, be careful where you navigate on the Internet. Second, be very suspicious of any prompts to download software you aren’t intentionally trying to install. Third, watch out for “phishing” (pronounced ‘fishing’) emails. These emails can be scary to receive. They usually read something to the effect of ´you have been hacked, click here to download software that will clean your computer´. In fact, these emails are tricking you into downloading the malicious software itself. Finally, call me if you have any questions at all about something happening on your computer.
